ANBU Illam

Anbu Illam means “House of Hope” was started in the year 1983.  The Department of Preventive Medicine and Rehabilitation of Christian medical College, Vellore (CMC) was treating Cerebral Palsied people with various therapies in order to rehabilitate them.  Since this population needed long term therapy, people from lower socio economic background found it difficult to go for therapy on a regular basis.  Moreover, the parents or the caregivers are the bread winners who had to forego their daily bread if they take the child for therapy for a longer period.  Mr. Yesudian from Churches’ Council for Child Care & Youth (CCCYC) Bangalore, and professional such as Miss. Jean Bald, Miss. Monica Hopkins, Miss. Elizabeth Worrel from CMC felt the need to start residential programme for these children. This need was expressed to Rt. Rev. Sam Ponniah, the then Bishop of Vellore Diocese. The Vellore Diocese was very generous in providing the Voorhees College Hostel at Sainathapuram, since the Hostel was moved to another campus.  Anbu Illam is managed by the CSI Diocese of Vellore which is partly supported byKindernothilfe, India (KNH), CCCYC, Bangalore and also by the government of Tamil Nadu through the District Disability Rehabilitation Office, Vellore.
